Event Details

On Tuesday evening, September 17, Mary Riley Styles Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Falls Church will show part 2 of the PBS American Experience documentary, The Vote, which covers the final years of the decade from 1909 to 1920 when the leaders of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote considered the most effective methods for effecting social change.

The methods these unsung heroes of the movement ultimately implemented included the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. Their battle finally led to the passage in 1919 and the ratification in 1920 of the 19th amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The Vote describes how this fight fundamentally altered accepted ideas about women's proper role in American society and challenged how the nation viewed then - and continues to debate today - citizenship and democracy.

The Vote will be shown in the library's upper conference room off the main lobby, beginning at 6:00 pm. Registration (below) is requested but walk-ins are welcome space permitting!
